Six-Year-Old Theology

My six-year-old is having hernia surgery tomorrow. When she turned to me and said, “It’s my first surgery, so it will be interesting for me” I realized that my health has made this a very unusual situation. Parents prefer that their kids never need to utter the word surgery, much less have one. We want to protect our beans from everything, hoping to avoid any kind of discomfort or unhappiness, ever. Having seen her mom undergo multiple procedures, my daughter just assumed she would one day have a surgery – just as she would one day go to school, or ride a bike.

At first glance, this might actually seem sad, we want kids to be all butterflies and rainbows. But at a second glance, I think this illustrates a comfortably with life that many of us struggle to find deep into our old age. Tough things happen to everyone, no matter how careful we are. Cars crash, tornadoes spin and disease creeps in. The story of our life is etched with how we manage the heartbreak.

I’m sure she is scared. We wrote down her questions for the surgeon and talked about the good parts (your mommy makes you fudge and your daddy buys you Lion King 1 1/2). But ultimately, she’s packed up her teddy bear and is ready for her “first surgery”.

May we all undertake the difficulties in life with such interest and grace.
